Tony Rich

Tony Rich, also known under his alias Asbestos Hunter, has literally served ‘in the trenches’ as an industrial hygienist and environmental technician in the consulting field for the past twenty years, specializing in asbestos-related work, including: inspection surveys, abatement monitoring/sample analyses, project management, regulatory compliance, and worker training. He has also received microscopy training from McCrone Research Institute for identification of bulk asbestos via polarized-light microscopy (PLM).

Over the years, Tony has developed an extensive collection of asbestos-related photographs, product materials, artefacts, historical books, industry documents, film archives, and other related media. He is also a gifted photographer.

Stephen Sadley

Stephen Sadley has been the Chief Executive of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) since 2008, following joining ARCA in 2000 as Business Development Manager before becoming the General Manager. He has spent his entire career in the asbestos management industry, in various roles. As CE of ARCA, he also is a member of The Asbestos Liaison Group (ALG) and has played a significant part in setting up the Asbestos Removal Management Institute (ARMI). With a BA in Business Management and a BSc in Environmental Science, he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Stephen will give the Keynote Speech and explain how a trade association in the asbestos removal industry can be pro-active in developing tools for and drive professionalism throughout the industry; providing the best support to assist members in good practice and end-clients in the safe management of asbestos. He will cover some of the elements on how this can be achieved, including the development of industry qualifications, auditing removal work and guidance.

Harry Steinberg QC

Harry Steinberg QC is a barrister at 12 King’s Bench Walk. He specialises in asbestos litigation and private international group claims. Chambers & Partners described him as “the go-to man for asbestos claims; no-one else compares”.

Harry will focus his presentation on the dramatic effect that the importation of vast quantities of asbestos fibre had on health, welfare and laws of England and Wales.


Ron Symonds

Ron Symonds MBA MSc FRICS CMIOSH MIIRSM will be a Session Moderator at the conference.

In 2016, he gave a well-received presentation for the EAF, on the challenges of managing asbestos in a large property portfolio. (The Royal Mail is the largest property owner in the UK.)

Hein Tersteeg

Hein Tersteeg is a highly experienced CINI international insulation inspector, scaffolding inspector and asbestos coordinator for the firm Asis-t. As such, he is presently active at the vast petrochemical site of ExxonMobil in Rotterdam – and he knows and understands this complex like the back of his hand.

Hein will explain how difficult complex asbestos surveys and removal jobs in petrochemical industries can become as a result of laws and regulations which are not based on practical knowledge concerning the daily routine of these industries.

Dale M. Timmons, R.G.

Dale is the Technical Director of ARI Global Technologies – World-wide technology licensing for the destruction and recycling of asbestos. He has lead the global development for multiple new advanced waste technologies including; Thermochemical Conversion Technology (TCCT).   Dale has over 25 years of waste management experience in  stabilising hazardous and radioactive waste including asbestos, PCBs, dioxin, VOCs, SVOCs toxic metals and radiological waste.  Dale is the inventor of TCCT, holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology, and is a registered professional in the United States.

Matthew Timms

Matthew Timms is the Director of Silverwood and formerly a Director at Shield On Site Services and KIWA UK Compliance.

He has considerable knowledge and experience, with 25 years working within the environmental, analytical and testing market including 20 years within the asbestos testing and inspection consultancy sector. Matthew gained a BSC (Hons) at Sheffield University and studied an M.B.A. at  Bradford University School of Management.

In his presentation, Matthew will touch on an important topic: how overdependency on volume contracts and the increased use of frameworks can impact the quality of service.

Brendan J. Tully

Brendan is a partner at the American law firm Phillips & Paolicelli LLP in New York, where he heads the Asbestos & Talc department.  One of the leading trial lawyers in the United States in this field, Brendan has blazed new ground in pursuing American product liability lawsuits for international mesothelioma victims. He has won millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients and has lectured extensively in the United States and Europe on asbestos litigation, international product liability and trial advocacy.

At the EAF conference, Brendan will present on the latest legal developments regarding asbestos in talc products, thereby putting unsuspecting people in many countries at the risk of asbestos exposure. Of course, he will also discuss developments in international product liability. An experienced speaker, he will have you spellbound.

Colette Willoughby

Colette Willoughy is a highly qualified health and safety professional with an MA in Health and Safety Law and Environmental Law and the Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.

Additionally, Colette is BOHS Asbestos Qualifications Technical Advisor and holds the BOHS Certificate of Operational Competence in Asbestos. She sits on the BOHS board of examiners for the Certificate of Competence in Asbestos, and as such is responsible for advising on the technical content of all BOHS asbestos-related exams. Colette is also a technical assessor for UKAS, for both Testing Organisations and Inspection Bodies.

Colette has over 34 years of experience in all aspects of asbestos control, management, training and legal compliance, in addition to providing expert witness advice for both civil litigation and criminal prosecutions.

Hans van der Wart Msc, MBA, Bsc

Hans van der Wart will be your Conference Chairman for the third time. In daily life, he is the Executive Vice President at Kiwa Compliance International (formerly called Shield Group), a growing group of companies that do environmental, chemcial and biological testing, surveying and consultancy activities, mainly in the field of dangerous compounds/situations such as asbestos, legionella, mould adn decay fungi, Industrial air, Industrial hygiëne and fire safety.

Hans has studied analytical chemistry at the University of Leiden and holds both a Master egree Chemistry and an MBA for Master Strategic Management.
